About us
We are situated at 48 Victoria Avenue in Palmerston North - at the moment Victoria Avenue is particulary beautiful as all the leaves on the trees have turned to their autumn colours and it is like driving through a golden carpet. We are in the Terazzo Buidling on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Main Street - in the same building we have Van Meer suit hire, a City Health phsiotherapy practice, on one side of us and Maxima Dancing Zone school on the other side.. Next to them is a laundry and just opened (and very popular) we now have 101 coffee shop.. It's a very busy, buzzy block - we love it here!.
Do you know about our Christmas in July stitching retreat? Cottage Flair and The Cloth Shop are joining forces for the first weekend in July - we have invited Leanne Beasley and Rosalie Quinlan
to be our guest tutors and we have booked the fabulous Oreti resort in Pukawa Bay . Jill and I visited Oreti last week and spent a few hours with the events organiser, Fleur checking out the work room, cafeteria, menus and accommodation and we are very happy with all the arrangements.
This will be the first time Leanne and Rosalie have run a retreat in New Zealand and they are both designing new projects for the Stitching Retreat. We now have the requirements lists from Rosalie and Leannne, if you have booked and have not received a copy of them email clothshop@xtra.co.nz and we will send them to you - also email us if you have not let us know what colour hanky linen you want in your stitchery kit. As I write this there is possibly 1 space left, so if this weekend sounds like something you would like to do email us now.
We have moved on to our stage of the retreat - we are making you a surprise! in Jill's words "we want them (you) to take away something they will keep forever" This photo is a sneak preview!
Congratulations Marjorie!
We are thrilled to announce that Marjorie Dawson won the Husqvarna Emerald 183 sewing machine - donated by The Cloth Shop and Husqvarna - at Tote and Gloat in Palmerston North on 2nd May. It was a very emotional win - the winner was decided b y a lucky draw. Sue, the president of Rose City Quilers, who run Tote and Gloat, drew the numbers in three separate draws, first the 1's (6) and the 10's (5) - Marjorie said at this stage friends on both sides of her were clutching her hand and just willing her to win - and she did when Sue drew our a 4 - 456 was her number!! She came up on to the stage to accept her prize and told us that she started quilting on her very old machine after she had a masectomy a few years ago, but the cancer came back and she has had to have more treatment - the Emerald 183 is just the kick start she needs to get back into it again.
This photo was taken at The Cloth Shop on the Monday after Tote and Gloat where Marjorie had her first lesson on her new sewing machine.
Life is a Celebration!
This is a new Block of the Month from The Cloth Shop. It is a first for us as it is all the patterns are in the Homespun magazine and it is a mystery. Each block has been designed by a different quilt designer (Leanne Beasley is one of them) and feature some piecing, some applique and some stitchery. The fabrics are soft and feminine and have been designed by Tanya Whelan - we have managed to get the same fabrics as the original design in the Homespun magazine so that's good. Life is a Celebration has been designed to support the charities involved with Ovarian Cancer and all the blocks are designed to celebrate things we hold dear to our hearts. So far we have blocks about home, friends, being together, flowers and the tree of life.
You can buy this Block of the Month in two ways - One magazine and the fabrics to make the Life is a Celebration blocks monthly ($39.90 each month)or if you already subscribe to the magazine you can buy the fabric only. $28.00 per month This block of the month runs for twelve months.
We have only recently received the fabric and we have just finished Block 1 which is pictured here.
If You would like to join this Block of the Month send us your details on our secure page This link will take you to our Contact page and there is a drop down menu to the secure page.
New Fabrics!
We have heaps! Yesterday we received the complete range of Nancy Halvorsen's blender fabrics called Tried and True. These are in contemporary country colours and we have 54 different fabrics. We have already earmarked some of them for one of our Blocks of the Month, but they looked so good sitting on the table we have decided to cut some of them into packs and start a new fabric club called "Tried and True".
The club will run over seven months and each month you will receive a different colourway. For those of you who want to join the club you will receive one free fat eighth each month e.g. Month one is red -there are eight reds in the range so you will be sent eight fat eighths but you will actually only pay for seven.
Of course you can buy the packs individually if you don't want to join the club - take a look at our Fabric Club page for the complete range of colours and prices.
Fabrics are also available by the metre.
Look at this cute little guy!
This Monkey is made from Yo Yo's - doesn't he look cute? The legs and arms are made with 108 medium size yo yos and the body is made from 11 large yo yos. The head and tail are made up and stuffed and then everything is sewn together. The yoyos were easy and although the face and head look a little tricky they are not . He is part of the Indigo Junction series of patterns of toys made with YoYos - at the moment we are making a cat and the mouse and one of our lovely friends is making us up the elephant.
Patterns $22.00 Yo Yo makers are $16.50
Clarice Cliff fabrics.
The minute I saw this fabric I loved it! We have chosen the bright orange colourway. It arrived just before Tote and Gloat and we sold all we had of the trees - however we bought all our supplier had left on Monday so we have plenty again. $28.00 per metre. We have now added to the range and have all the fabric in the orange including the trees featured below and the plates. There is a free pattern using this fabric on the designer's - Fabric Freedom
- website. It is called Deco Dance. We have all the fabric featured except for the crocusses which did not come to New Zealand.

Living the Dream by Leanne Beasley
We have a sample of this quilt - made and quilted by Julie Flannagan - in the shop. She has made it up in soft pinks, but it would work equally well with any combination of other colours. We have some pretty blues in the shop at the moment. It is made special by the addition of little handstitched tags that are stitched into the quilt. :Living the Dream" Daisy" - with rows or lazy daisies stitched above it, "Celebrate Friendship" Follow your Heart" "Feel the sand in your toes" "I want to go to the beach" are some of the examples - Julie has personalised her quilt by adding some of her own sayings.
